The Engineering Behind Craft Beer
In the Fall of 2014, Sampling Science: The Engineering Behind Craft Beer was dreamt up by Anna Hayes and Taylor Lubecki, the original fundraising chairs for the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE). Anna and Taylor wanted to mix engineering with something enjoyed by many: craft beer. This dynamic duo focused on creating an event that highlighted on Tampa Bay's booming craft brew industry, as well as educating attendees on the engineering and science that goes into making these delicious brews.
The purpose of this event is to help AIChE and SWE raise funds to continue their mission of promoting STEM education. Every year, both of these organizations participate in the University of South Florida College of Engineering's Engineering EXPO, which allows thousands of middle and high school students to experience engineering and science hands-on. It is the organizations' mission to inspire as many students as possible to pursue a career in STEM. These organizations use the funds raised to invite professional speakers to general body meetings, attend professional conferences, and tour facilities. Each of these events allows their members to develop well-rounded views about becoming an engineer. With this event, we will be able to go above and beyond to catalyze students to do just that: become engineers.
Everyone's favorite part of Sampling Science! Dozens of brewers from all over the Tampa Bay area come out to share samples of their craft beers.
